Laptop-solid.png  Why you should offload your PostgreSQL analytical workloads to ClickHouse
(7 min read)

Many companies are still using a general-purpose database for every project. If you already have a lot of expertise in that database, why would you use something else?

The answer is performance.

When it comes to query performance, a general RDBM doesn't stand a chance.

We’re going to
demonstrate this with our new Aiven for ClickHouse® database. And not just with some standard benchmarking tools - we’ll test drive it with some real world data, something that can answer real questions that businesses might be interested in.
coffee-solid   (Re)Create Apache Kafka® topics with Terraform
(4 min read)

One of the joys of cloud data platforms is the ability to quickly and easily create and configure services. We often find ourselves  working on more than one project at a time, so by using Terraform to create/recreate the setup, we can swiftly get going again when we return to the task.

Lorna has recently been working with Apache Kafka® quite a bit, using Terraform to recreate the topics that the application uses, and she shares her approach in
this post.
Laptop-solid.png  Webhook data from Apache Kafka®️ to the world
(5 min read)

One of the best Kafka connectors available is the HTTP sink connector because it's so adaptable.

Today we'll use an HTTP Connector to send the data from a Kafka topic to any HTTP endpoint, giving you an
easy way to integrate your data with your own code or any platform that supports webhooks. This lets you send your data to places that might not have a prebuilt connector!
Another month, another heartfelt and clear-eyed commitment to openness. What have we seen and done in the big wide world of open source this month?
  • Our Open Source Engineering Director, Josep Prat, has been invited by the Apache Kafka project to become a new Kafka committer! 🎉We're proud to support the open source community and the Apache Kafka open source project. Congratulations to Josep! 🥳
  • Our Senior Software Engineer, Michael Hoffmann, is now a maintainer of Perkeep. Perkeep is a set of open source formats, protocols, and software for modeling, storing, searching, sharing, and synchronizing data in the post-PC era.
  • The new version of Klaw 1.2.0 has been released! Klaw, the latest OS tool by Aiven, helps enterprises cope with Apache Kafka topics, schema registry, and connectors governance by introducing roles/authorizations to users of various teams.
  • Lukáš Vlček, our staff Software Engineer, has a demo OpenSearch plugin that adds an endpoint so everyone can inspect the available analyzers, tokenizers, token filters, and the list goes on. Check it out here and leave some feedback!
  • Andriy Redko and Lukáš Vlček presented at the OpenSearch Community meeting and talked about the new releases of the Prometheus exporter plugin for OpenSearch 2.4.1 & 1.3.7.
bookmark-solid  Worth a look

But wait, there’s more! What else has been going on as we launch ourselves enthusiastically, face-first into 2023? If you’re curious, take a look at some of these:

  • Using Clickhouse for Aiven with Quarkus and a dataset of 42 million rows - check out this short video by our Staff Developer Advocate Sébastien Blanc!
  • Markdown, Asciidoc, or reStructuredText - a tale of docs-as-code: a blog comparing various markup languages and docs frameworks by our Senior Developer advocate Dewan Ahmed.
  • Better together: predicate pushdown and compute-storage separation - watch this video to learn the various meanings of compute-storage separation, the problems it solves, the new problems it can create, and how predicate pushdown saves the day.
  • Why SQL should be your default choice for data engineering pipelines.
  • A unique constraint where NULL conflicts with everything - article by Laurenz Albe.

That's it, folks!
