Site Reliability Engineering Manager at Aiven + Podcasting 🎙️ at Engineering Kiosk

When having to put out fires 🔥 that result from managing production, automate manual work away, and keep the lights on by fixing incidents, you are the fire brigade 🚒 That describes the typical life of a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) at many orgs. However, I joined the SRE team at Aiven 2 months ago and noticed that some things are fundamentally different: • Follow the sun rotation: SRE folks in North America (US/CA), Europe, and Down under (Australia/New Zealand) → No nightshifts • Scaling stateful services: Scaling and automating stateless services is already hard. However, doing this on stateful services/databases is an exciting challenge. • Automation first: Due to the sheer number of servers we maintain, manual work is not possible. The fleet is that big; even small scripts that loop through a list of machines won't finish during your workweek. Therefore, solid and reliable automation is vital. Duct tape solutions won't survive. • Security through proper engineering: The Security bar at Aiven is very high, but I mostly do not notice them, and it is (by far) no productivity blocker. How? James Arlen and the team are doing a superb engineering job of keeping us safe but not standing in our way. And this goes far beyond the typical Single Sign-On and 2FA topics like running internal phishing tests, searching vulns like Remote Code Executions in our and used open-source products, patching every known issue, implementing proper audit logging everywhere ... making the hard stuff look easy. • Engineering related product: Aiven's mission is to make developers' lives better. A way to do this is by having a product to modernize cloud infrastructure by managing the complex parts. As a Software Engineer, I can identify with the product and influence our product development.  • Open Source and Transparency at heart: Aiven (Josep Prat and his team) supports Open Source heavily by running an Open Source Program Office (OSPO), is a Member of the TODO (OSPO) Group, supports employee contributions through the Plankton Program, and employs full-time Open Source contributors for Open Search (fork of ElasticSearch), PostgreSQL, Apache Flink, LibreSWAN and Fedora packaging. Inside Aiven, close to all information is public and accessible. • Remote and async: 1/3 of Aiven folks work fully remote. SRE/Security/Support is distributed worldwide. So Async and written first is essential. Still, if you want to meet people from the org, it is encouraged to travel, get to know each other, and work from our offices in various countries. Interesting 2 months. We aim to scale by engineering and automation, not by throwing more people at it. However, I am looking for new team members who love to run production and operations with a Software Engineering craft and mindset (and avoid the "this is fine" scenario). If you are interested to hear more or have questions, drop me a note for an informal chat. If not, you got a few lovely ideas on how to improve your org :)

The most dangerous thing in firefighting is that you get a lot of respect, honor and attention when you do it. Everyone knows that not having a fire at all is better than extinct a fire. So let's count every day without outage and celebrate them and give credits to the people that did there job well.
